'Tis the season to celebrate the industrious world of bees! Beekeeping, a fascinating and essential practice, has gained popularity in recent years as more people recognize the critical role these tiny pollinators play in our ecosystems. If you have a beekeeper in your life or if you're one yourself, this Christmas is the perfect time to spread some joy with gifts that enhance the beekeeping experience. Here's a curated list of the top 10 items on every beekeeper's Christmas wish list.
High-Quality Bee Suit:
Beekeepers know the importance of protective gear. A durable, well-ventilated bee suit is a fantastic gift to ensure safety during hive inspections. Look for suits with features like a removable veil, reinforced zippers, and pockets. We suggest this one from Amazon (use our link to support A&W Apiaries!). If I had to buy again, I probably would go with Khaki as it won't show smoke stains as bad.
Beekeeping Tools Set
Equip the beekeeper with a comprehensive set of essential tools, including a hive tool, bee brush, smoker, and frame grip. A complete toolkit makes hive management smoother and more efficient. You can find a great toolkit for new beeks from Amazon here. If you have an experienced beekeeper on your list, you might want to try something more along the lines of this tool belt from Etsy.
Educational Books on Beekeeping
Expand the beekeeper's knowledge with insightful books on beekeeping practices, hive management, and the fascinating life of bees. There are plenty of titles catering to all levels of expertise.
Hive Monitoring System
Introduce technology into the apiary with a hive monitoring system. These devices provide real-time data on hive conditions, including temperature, humidity, and bee activity. It's a perfect gift for tech-savvy beekeepers. A&W Apiaries does not use these products in our own hives quite yet, but we are researching their specs to see which would be best for our apiary! Give us feedback if you already use these (or related) products!

Bee-Friendly Plants or Seeds
Enhance the surroundings of the beekeeper's apiary with bee-friendly plants or seeds. Lavender, bee balm, and sunflowers are excellent choices that not only beautify the area but also provide additional forage for the bees.
Honey Extractor
For the honey harvest, a quality honey extractor is indispensable. Opt for a stainless steel or plastic extractor that can handle the workload and make the honey extraction process more efficient. The 2/4 frame extractor is what we use at A&W Apiaries and it works great for a small number of hives. If your beekeeper has more than 10 hives, they probably have their own extractor or will be in the market for a larger one. Dadant has many to choose from, but it might be wise to talk to your beekeeper about what they want out of an extractor (motor, size, etc.).
Beekeeping Workshop or Course
Give the gift of knowledge by enrolling the beekeeper in a beekeeping workshop or course. Many organizations offer both online and in-person classes, providing valuable insights and hands-on experience. Cornell ($299), PennState Extension ($189) and PerfectBee offer an online course for very new beekeepers, but we anticipate it will cost some money. Consider telling your beekeeper about a free course through Alison! Have a master beekeeper you are shopping for? Consider this Master Beekeeping Certificate Program ($899)!
Honey Refractometer
A honey refractometer is an invaluable tool for beekeepers, offering precise measurement of honey moisture content. This device ensures the honey harvested is of optimal quality, as excessive moisture can lead to fermentation and spoilage. By allowing beekeepers to monitor honey moisture levels with accuracy, a refractometer contributes to maintaining the high quality, taste, and shelf life of honey products.
Personalized Hive Accessories
Add a personal touch with customized hive accessories. This could include engraved hive tools, personalized hive stands, or even hand-painted hive boxes. Personalization adds a unique flair to the apiary.
